"Even at temperatures approaching -30C, heat pumps outperform oil and gas heating systems, according to the research from Oxford University and the Regulatory Assistance Project thinktank."

@BenHoare plenty of propaganda in US, too, about heat pump efficiency in US Midwest where winter cold is as low as Nordic countries. Biden administrationā€™s Infrastructure legislation (the replacement for a more thorough Green New Deal), however, includes rebates for heat pumps to encourage them throughout the country.

Well done, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, which is installing a geothermal heating and cooling system to help reduce its carbon emissions.
The new energy centre will be built and run by energy firm E.ON under the plan and will use four high-efficiency heat pumps to extract heat from the air and 64 boreholes up to 250 metres deep to draw natural warmth from the earth.

Does anyone know if thereā€™s on when / where installations are happening?

Valuable advice for activists trying to lower emissions. @gregor shows that trying to STOP fuel SUPPLY has only a temporary effect, whereas REPLACING end uses (e.g. , ), or (I'd say) ADDING large-scale & @solar, all make lasting, large reductions in CO2 emissions. open.substack.com/pub/gregor/p

What I believe is a simple and nice concept to live in:

- ~5 story building
- proper insulation
- rectangular ground plot
- proper roof with and large roof overhang to have additional rain protection
- district with
- "outside" bicycle parking (not downstairs in some cellar...)
- "external/detached balconies"
- ground floor with a proper

The German government is looking at further developing deep geothermal energy to create a nationwide climate-neutral heat supply by 2045. According to studies, deep geothermal energy could generate around 300 terawatt hours of heat annually from an installed capacity of 70 GW -- more than half the future heat demand of all buildings.

Geothermal and ground coupled heat pumps use in the U.S.is growing too.

@alexwitze @ScienceNews I'd like to see grid forming inverters and safe batteries installed everywhere (like NYC apartments) providing a distributed grid. Installing batteries in NYC apartments is the only way we will ever see and . will never beef up the grid. Buildings will never install new electrical cables.

'Energy storage' is too often understood to comprise only electricity storage.

The heating sector needs to be electrified anyway, so why not use to convert wind&solar power to heat (or resistors for 'excess' power), and store it in thermal like boreholes, caverns, pits or aquifiers?

That's cheaper in regions, where space heating represents a significant share of energy consumption and is used.

Over the past few years, electric have been gaining popularity as a growing number of homeowners look for ways to replace their old fossil fuel boilers and furnaces.

But installing a whole new system can be confusing and overwhelming.

So Steve Breit spends his days as a volunteer heat pump coach, helping people make the switch.

ā€œWhen I spend a few hours with people, theyā€™re just so appreciative of the help,ā€ he says. yaleclimateconnections.org/202

Could a shared heat pump system warm every home on your street?

The era of the gas boiler is almost over. That much is clear. What isnā€™t so clear is what will replace it.

Usually, ground source heat pumps can only be installed in homes with plenty of land, but a UK company is rolling out shared networks for entire streets.
