@sfoskett I have watched so many random amateurs on youtube who think applying more is better that I just skip over the thermal paste portion of most build videos.
The whole point of thermal paste is to fill in the imperfections in the connection between the #heatsink and the hot object.
The most correct method is a visibly thin layer over most of the processor.
I'm frequently tempted to use a small comb and 'brush' the paste the way you would mortar for tiles.

After taking apart more of my HP Pavilion ze4800 laptop than I wanted to, finally got to the CPU. And this is what I saw.
At first, I panicked the old thermal paste had pulled off bits of the die, but after microscopic examination, it was a layer of black on top of the pink die.

If y'all don't jump on this deal, I will!

Today replaced the #RaspberryPi fan with an aluminum #heatsink and running with CPU at 50% the temperature is in the 46 to 48 C range. With previous test using Pimoroni #fan shim running with same load and always on fan the temperature is at 33 C. Also can be seen temperature variations between 50 and 65 C using software that turns on and off the fan
Simpler and better solution for me is heatsink : steady temperature, no software, no noise and no movable parts
ZEUS MINING ASIC miner maintenance knowledge:
When using tweezers and a portable desoldering gun to remove the heat sink on the Antminer S9 hash board, the temperature must be controlled at around 450 degrees Celsius.

After reassambling my #prusamini and doing some calibration prints, something was weird. Actually, I do know now why my #prusa leaked #filament and nozzle could be screwed too far into the block before I started the service. #heatsink thread got broken.

After 10 years of service the fan on my CPU cooler gave up the ghost on me.
Given I'm in the process of putting together a new build I didn't want to have to spend anything so I ended up sacrificing my rear exhaust which thankfully was the same size.
However it wasn't 100% compatible with the heat sink clips so I resorted to trusty old zip ties . It's not pretty but it works, and I still have a large roof fan to extract heat from the system.
