Sewage sludge spreading leads to #farm groundwater PFAS contamination

"The long-standing practice of spreading treated sewage sludge and septage on farm fields has contaminated groundwater in some areas with PFAS, recent sampling shows.

"The discovery has prompted a state agriculture official to say that a prohibition on harvesting feed and crops from those fields may be needed, And it has led a coalition of environmental groups to call on the state to test for PFAS levels in biosolids before they are spread on fields.

"After seven out of 34 land application sites in Vermont were found to have PFAS levels above state groundwater standards, the state Department of Environmental Conservation is considering measures to prevent future contamination.

"#Vermont wastewater treatment plant operators and septic companies must dispose of the residual end products somewhere, and their options are limited. With tight capacity at southern #NewEngland incinerators, they can send it to a landfill or to a processing plant in New York, or spread it on fields as fertilizer.

"Sludge and septage to be spread on fields must be treated to EPA standards to reduce pathogens and limit #HeavyMetals, and are called 'biosolids.' Critics have argued those standards do not address the thousands of chemicals that now show up in human waste, like #pharmaceuticals and #PFAS.

"Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or 'PFAS,' gained notoriety in Vermont after the state discovered in 2016 that a particularly toxic form of the chemical had contaminated hundreds of drinking water wells around two former ChemFab factories in Bennington. That discovery prompted the DEC to start widespread sampling to better understand other potential sources of PFAS drinking water contamination."

The #Alberta government is refusing to release snowpack contamination data along the eastern slopes of the Rockies in the wake of a new report showing wind-deposited contamination of a remote Alberta lake from mountaintop-removal coal mining in southeastern B.C. Although the scientists who conducted the study are muzzled by the #UCP government, I'm not. And I'll have more to say on the matter shortly.

Their results also suggest that it's not any one pollutant that drives this effect -- though traffic-related #pollution, #ParticulateMatter, certain industrial pollutants and certain #HeavyMetals and #petrochemicals stand out -- but rather an accumulation of many small effects.

This makes a lot of sense to me. It also suggests that regulations that focus on one toxic exposure at a time, rather than #CumulativeImpacts, are absolutely insufficient to keep children safe.

This #ConsumerReports study of #HeavyMetals (eg #lead) in #chocolate is horrifying & has radically changed my habits (I chestfeed a baby)

But it’s v strange to me that CR doesn’t seem to think there’ll be any variation btwn bars of the same brand & type! It’d be much more useful public edu to explain that variation might be substantial. High-risk (eg pregnant) ppl shouldn’t treat the low estimates on some as a final word.

But I guess that undercuts CR’s business model…

So I really want my #baby to get tons of early exposure to #soil #microbes (a bit tricky in a Minnesota winter!)…

…but I massively don’t want her to get unnecessary exposure to the #HeavyMetals that the soil around here is hugely contaminated with.

How have other parents solved this conundrum? If I buy soil from a garden store, is it actually less contaminated than the ground? (That’s the point of raised beds, right? But is it true?)

In terms of tuna it could be either the #heavyMetals or what they were fed for #Australian market.

For soy, and other farmed products that are sprayed with toxic herbicides, pesticides and fungicides it appears to affect the #gutFlora/#microbiology of the digestive system.

After going #organic (and #ethical) all health problems disappeared, almost immediately.
