I’m reading lots of Hebrew correspondence from the early 20th. A frequent acronym they use for God is השי״ת (ה׳ יתברך). It means “God, blessed be he.” But I can’t help but read it phonetically: hashit, which would mean “the shit.” #hebrew #jewish #Mazeldon #languages #language #god #religion

I want to improve my #hebrew, any tips?

I've come across extremely weird stuff while reading the Sagas. One of the most perplexing of these is a name that pops up in Sturlunga Saga.

Why is he called chaim? No one knows.

For modern eyes it looks Hebrew but was that the intent?

It is almost certain that this was a real person. Unlike the Sagas which deal with the Settlement of Iceland, Sturlunga is near contemporary.

Before #Hebrew used its current #alphabet (אבג) which was adopted from Aramaic, it used the Paleo-Hebrew alphabet (𐤀𐤁𐤂), a regional variant of Proto-Canaanite and virtually the same as Pheonician (which is the origin of the Aramaic, Pheonician, Greek, Latin, Cyrillic, Armenian, Anatolian alphabets and others).

I really think it should make a comeback, it's a cool script and somehow both older than modern Hebrew but also more similar to other scripts like Latin.

2/ in #hebrew the letters are not connected in a word, but there are different forms for different positions. For example "מ" and "ם". First one for first and middle of a word and the second for last. Why?

Lachoudian - A forgotten Jewish-Bavarian language

Lachoudian was spoken in Schopfloch for centuries. It has its roots in #Hebrew - a testimony to #Jewish culture, which existed from the 12th Century in northern #bavaria . The last #Jews of Schopfloch were expelled or murdered in the #Nazi era - but their language is still kept alive:

Another possible, though uncertain, paleo-Hebrew variation is in the following verse, where MT reads חַטּ֖וּשׁ and OG ᾿Αττοὺθ, possibly representing Hebrew חטות. #Hebrew ש vs. ת are not very similar, but they are closer in Paleo-Hebrew 𐤔 vs. 𐤕. However, the difference could also be Uncial #Greek C vs. Θ, so it might not be a Paleo-Hebrew variation.

Random question: are there any good lists of ancient #Egyptian loanwords in ancient #Hebrew ? I'm interested in sound correspondences between the writing systems in particular, and I thought that loanwords might give useful evidence.
