And you know what? I'll take it. As self-serving as the choice may be, if it helps the new open standard gain traction, I'll take it, especially considering how often things go the other way instead. Surely better than Google's braindead choice to pull the implementation they had already added to #Blink.

I don't believe #Apple's choice to adopt #JpegXL is a selfless embracement of open standards. Rather, I suspect they ran internal tests and found out quickly that #jxl allowed them for sufficiently more compact files (better for storage and transmission) and faster deciding for their own purposes to justify its adoption. I wouldn't be surprised if they start phasing out #HEIC in favor of JXL as their photo format as a next step.

First #Linux as a daily driver issues are surprisingly software not hardware. Googled a bunch & can’t figure out how to view #HEIC files in #Fedora 38- I can understand if licenses require a separate download but I can’t even figure that out. A hand full of heic libraries & a few image viewers but the only thing that works is #GIMP ? Imagine if on windows you had to open photoshop to preview a pic you took on your phone? Second, FireFox repeatedly prompts for my pin if my #YubiKey is plugged in.

Okay, I'm coming out of my libheif rabbithole with a new #NodeJS package: libheif-node-dy

It's a native module for #HEIF / #HEIC image decoding. Compared to the popular heic-decode, it's 3 to 5 times faster. It's dynamically linked against libheif for good measure, to completely make sure LGPL dynamic linking rule is satisfied.

This does mean you have to separately install libheif, but libheif is widely available in all distros so it shouldn't be hard to get.

Since Mastodon 4.0.0 added HEIC support, perhaps it's the iOS app or something about how iOS itself hands the image across to the app that is causing it to end up as a PNG instead of at least a JPEG? 🤷‍♂️
