Shout out to Charlie Brooker or whoever put a shot of one of the characters reading Heinlein's Moon is a Harsh Mistress in S6E3 of Black Mirror. Hell yeah.

Okay, so now I'm thinking about Robert 's ideas on how / / should be run, and I really want to see someone try to write a story about the deaf and blind person with no legs and one arms applying for service to get . Like, give me the off the wall story about the scientists getting this guy to count the hairs on caterpillars for 4 years, give me the story of them being held up as a pinnacle example of a in the world of .

I don't like to hardline or pick sides on , but lately I've been thinking...

and may be the only two truly legitimate of : either power comes directly from the will of the people, or there is no power at all.

I feel like there might be room to discuss / in there, or -esque rules about who gets to vote, but I just can't see the arguments for / / being valid.

Astounding Science Fiction July 1950 (July 1950)

Not a design this time, just a still from the set of a movie. I've never seen the movie, I will try to check it out. I guess any movie about travelling to the moon became irrelevant as of 1969.

I posted about David Brin's 2017 essay Looking back at Heinlein's Future History - coming true before our eyes and in particular, Heinlein's afterword to The Past Through Tomorrow collection (which perhaps should have been titled Tomorrow Through the Past). What Heinlein said int the 1950s is still relevant today.

and more hashtags later.

Edward Kelley was the first article I edited on wikipedia in 2003 (I've been on wikipedia for a bit) . My great great grand aunt was reputedly a powerful witch. She got swindled in a land deal and made the land in question fallow. Apparently to this day nothing grows on it.

My own experiences for a large part I will only talk about in general terms, allusively or both. I do supplemental introductions later. Here are a few more hashtags:

Today in Writing History July 7, 1907: Robert Heinlein was born. Heinlein was a pioneer of “hard” science fiction, which emphasized scientific accuracy in science fiction stories. He was considered one of the big 3, along with Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Some of his best-known works include “Starship Troopers,” “Stranger in a Strange Land,” and “The Moon is a Hard Mistress.”

Recently finished reading _Martians Abroad_ by (2016 pub date).
It read like a juvenile (ala _Farmer in the Sky), but I mean that in a good way. Problem solving kid with spunk navigates space treachery. I enjoyed it, but in a comment, I felt the last chapter was tacked on after the fact, and the second to last chapter would have made a stronger ending.

His three-volume, essential retelling of 's *The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress* starts with *Luna: New Moon* (2015):

Which substantially out-Heinleins Heinlein, adding thickness and rigor to the tropes Heinlein tossed in as throwaways. Then, he topped himself with the sequel, *Luna: Wolf Moon* (2017):

This has a lot in common with science fiction, a genre full of thought experiments that ask 's famous three questions:

* What if?

* If only, and

* If this goes on...

These contrafactuals are incredibly useful and important. As critical tools, science fiction's parables about the future are the best chance we have for resisting the that insists that technology *must* be used in a certain way, or must exist at all.

It just occurred to me that there's a angle to 's "–All You Zombies–": the key to the correct attitude to suffering is to recognize that the separateness of persons is an illusion, so that perpetrator and victim are one.

Both . The bit from Pandora is quoted more often, but the bit from Tunnel is where, it appears, he ended up a few years later -- if he ended up anywhere and wasn't merely kicking text out under deadline. (Or equally likely, given Pandora is non-fiction, that he meant what he said there and was having Rod's big sister, a combat sergeant, tell him what he needed to hear at the moment.)

But it's an interesting contrast no matter how it plays out.

Finished Emma () earlier today. I just now realized:

George Knightley is a hard-working, broadly-competent rich guy with a big house and grounds that he likes showing off. He gets involved in all of the local projects, including engineering projects, and he likes lecturing people on proper behavior, especially young women. And around age 30, he developed a romantic fixation on a 13-year-old girl.

He’s totally a character.

My entry in the other-shoe-dropping competition: Around 1974 I read Robert 's book "Methuselah's Children", which contains a character named Rufus "Ruthless" King. Today I realized that's a reference to "The Bard: a Pindaric Ode" by Thomas Gray.
