#HelenGarner fans or anyone interested in exploring her writing might like this ABC Nightlife with host Suzanne Hill talking to author, bookseller and critic Sean O'Beirne, who's written an essay on Garner as part of the Writers on Writers series.
PS. I've also read and reviewed O'Beirne's short story collection, A Few Things Before The End (for Writing NSW in 2020) and highly recommend it. 📖

I'm reading Helen Garner's first volume of diaries (1978 through 1987) and here she is writing about a friend's transition in 1982:
"Our friend is only part way through the surgery, but one is already to use the word she. This is not difficult."
And then she describes her friend's general appearance, clothes, body shape, how pretty she is etc, ending on:
"Her beauty was touching, somehow; the result of drastic decisions, yet vivid and spontaneous."
❤️
What makes a writer happy? A great series in The Guardian asks writers what brings them joy these days. This response from Helen Garner...wow.
Reading it makes me think that what would make me happy is being able to write like this.
