Steller’s sea cows were hunted to #extinction off #Alaska within 30 years of first observation by Europeans. Their closest relatives ( #manatees, #dugongs) live in much warmer waters.

How did Steller’s sea cows adapt to cold? Signore et al. (2023) reconstructed the #hemoglobin and showed a single mutation provided more oxygen to tissues for higher metabolic rates via multiple mechanisms - lower O2 affinity, higher solubility, etc.

I haven't successfully donated blood since December 2021. early last year all of a sudden my hemoglobin was too low to donate every time I tried. My lab work showed that I was borderline anemic. Apparently, regularly donating blood can make you anemic, which makes sense but I hadn't thought about it that way.

I have to work to get my hemoglobin to the acceptable levels for donation, so of course I would have a crash.

Near infrared spectroscopy #NIRS relies mainly on two characteristics of human tissue:
1. The relative transparency of tissue to light in the NIR range, and
2. The oxygenation-dependent light absorbing characteristics of #hemoglobin.

By using a number of different wavelengths, the relative changes in hemoglobin concentration can be displayed continuously.
