So in our batch of 8 #chickens we had 4 roosters ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They are all sweet animals (I won't tolerate a mean rooster, the closest is Gumbo, and he's 1. all of 3 pounds 2. not actually bad about it, just fiercely protective of his hens 3. predator-proofing ).
Going to set up a bachelor flock, I think.

Hens do this to assert their dominance and establish a territory just like roosters will. #Chickens #Hens We have a new neighbour who has a big white cat,the big white cat fancied a chicken take out and decided the tiny old sebright who was all alone having escaped into next doors garden would be a good starter,I was a tiny bit concerned so we stood guard just incase ,then the cat ran past being hotly pursued by the sebright (who is blackbird sized) ,she carried on chasing it until it jumped the fence,where it sat glaring evilly at her from behind the protection of wire mesh fencing

🐔 As it's #PoultryDay here is a picture of my gang from last year. After losing one hen to a dog attack, and another to a fox, I bought a dog pen. It's strong, and it can be moved onto fresh grass every few days.
My hens are Blackrocks. They're friendly, lay very well, and are as tough as old boots. They don't mind getting wet, and they tried to eat all the recent snow! 🐔

This *never* gets old.
I’ve been looking into the #climate effects of certain staple foods (eek, rice?!) and was reminded how fortunate I am to have #backyard #hens as well as hyper-local suppliers of #chicken meat (yay, #Kansas ).
My coop is a “for life” operation, meaning my hens get to stay as long as they naturally live, even when they stop producing. I have one “retired” hen and 4 layers, who all lay slightly different-color eggs.
I am beyond fortunate.
