#OTD John Stevens Henslow, British #Priest, #Botanist, & #Professor, is born.

A mentor to #Darwin, John recommended Darwin for the expedition on the HMS Beagle & gave him a #Book for the journey: "Humboldt's Narrative," which he inscribed:

"J. S. #Henslow to his friend C. Darwin on his departure from England upon a voyage around the world. September 21st, 1831."

Darwin treasured this gift above all others. After his death, the book was gifted to the #Cambridge #Library.
