What is dark matter, and what are some current methods scientists are using to detect it? In this lecture, we explore the topic of this elusive substance that makes up approximately 85% of the matter in the universe. We discuss the evidence for the existence of dark matter, including gravitational lensing and the stability of galaxies, as well as the challenges in detecting it due to its lack of interaction with ordinary matter. We then focus on a particular candidate for dark matter called axions and describe an experiment aimed at detecting them using high-power lasers and strong magnets cooled to extremely low temperatures. The ALPS II experiment will significantly improve the sensitivity to a possible axion signal and could therefore provide crucial insight into the nature of dark matter. We also briefly discuss other methods for detecting dark matter, such as observing astrophysical processes. Finally, we consider the implications of dark matter for our understanding of the universe and the future directions of research in this exciting field. The lecture was given during the DESY Ukraine Winter School in February 2023.

This week in class we also looked at a cloud chamber so we could see sub-atomic particles from cosmic rays and from radioactivity with our own 👀.

I still get excited every time I do this! I first built a cloud chamber as a college student using instructions in a *very* old Scientific American article.

In this nice analysis from Super-Kamiokande we use 20+ years of data to set limits on the interactions of very light dark matter coming from the the galactic center.

It's a technically interesting analysis as we use fast moving protons that make Cherenkov light to find events and determine their direction (harder than our typical analyses that use electrons and muons).

The analysis was led by Linyan Wan at Boston Univ.

Never heard of FORM. But the common problem with #HEP #computing is mentioned several times "Universities tend to track scientists’ publication records, which means those who work on critical infrastructure are often passed over for hiring or tenure."

Ich gab meine Facharbeit (FA) mit dem Thema: "Zur Notwendigkeit der Gebärdensprache trotz Cochlear-Implantat (CI) - eine qualitative Untersuchung" im März 2022 ab. Dies ist meine bisher fundamentalste Arbeit.

In der Forschung des Themas war mir so gut wie alles bekannt. Denn ich ging selbst in einer (Förder-)Schule für Menschen mit #Hörbehinderung, lernte die #Gebärdensprache kennen und begegnete Menschen mit #Cochlear-Implantat.
Jedoch wurde mir der Ausmaß an der Bedeutung dieser Thematik erst durch die FA so richtig bewusst. Insbesondere in der Relation mit #Inklusion.

Für meine damaligen DozentInnen war es bedeutungsvoll. Denn erst durch meine FA konnten sie neue Erkenntnisse gewinnen. Es fand ein Um- bzw. Weiterdenken statt. Auf Empfehlung und Unterstützung meiner DozentInnen wurde somit meine FA in der #hep Zeitschrift veröffentlicht.

Nun freue ich mich, dass ich meine Forschung der Welt teilen kann:
