Todays update…

I planted some jalapeño seeds from supper the other evening! They’ve had a couple of nights in the pot but still no little sprouts. Google says I should wait about a fortnight, so fingers crossed 🤞 All four of my scallions have sprouted and are zooming upwards, I think I might have my first harvest soon! My mint plant Carrot has taken quite well to the new pot. My task today is to do some pruning I think. Finally I gave Santiago the echeveria a little haircut and repotted him. To my surprise there was no soil and he was completely rooted! He is back in a full pot and seems to be doing much better now. His younger sibling Oliver has gotten a bit fried by the sun (oops) so I gave him some TLC and moved him into the indirect sun. He is in between my basil plants and seems to be just a bit happier! Today is a bit overcast which is a welcome change from yesterday, here’s hoping I can get this done before any rain.

I made the first batch of for the freezer & there was exactly one jar leftover from last year's pesto! Always satisfying when I correctly gauge consumption for the year!

Amazing how much the basil had taken off in the last few weeks! Now a litre of yummy! Lemon thyme and oregano are drying and everything smells amazing!

Parsley is one of favorite herbs to plant in my garden. It's such a humble herb often overlooked but so often used in many recipes. Instead of buying it for just that Tablespoon of chopped parsley then forgetting the rest and left in the fridge, just head outside with scissors in hand and snip off what you need! It's Hardy too and grows year round.

My first lavender bloom! I have two lavender plants that survived an entire year - another first - and one of them is blooming. The fragrance of the fresh flowers is quite delicate compared to the way the scent of the essential oil positively clobbers you.

Me: I'll just make a quick salad dressing before dinner.

An hour later, brushing off my hands, slowly lighting a cigarette, and taking a long drag ...

Me: Let me tell you a story about chopping four kinds of herbs I grew in the garden.

Currently I’m growing some out of control borage, seven types of basil, four types of thyme, Cherokee mint, sage, marjoram, chamomile, parsley, dill, mullein, Russian tarragon, arnica, rosemary, false saffron, real saffron, and lavender. (I need to replant another basil and Mexican tarragon at the least, I think the cilantro could use another try and there are probably a couple others.)To my surprise, the cumin is actually growing too, with just a heating mat.

My first year starting seedlings has been a learning experience, but it sure is satisfying to look at.

Herb markers are an early birthday present from my partner. (I also already received the Hedley & Bennett apron because the package very loudly ruined the surprise.)

the oregano is starting to perk up. I love to grow herbs even though I can never use them all in my cooking. Sometimes I just enjoy crushing a leaf when I walk past to enjoy the scent
