In the interstices of other work, I love looking for early modern images of women reading-- especially old women reading. I have a wonderful engraving of a crone reading at work (a gift on a significant birthday 😁 ), and I'm always looking for more. This one by G Dou at the Rijksmuseum is a favorite.

Two Outta Three Ain't Bad

Isabella Clara Eugenia (d. 1633), ruler of the Spanish Netherlands, is the dedicatee of Spanish and Latin eds of this book on Spain's 1625 Siege of Breda victory.

The English one? Not so much! That's oddly dedicated to the English soldiers instead! All 3 books have foldouts, though thr last one curiously puts all its engravings on separate paper slips. The copper plate for the first two was probably recut for the third.

Getting back at work after some sick days. On my desk: this beautiful 16th-century book printed in civilité by Ameet Tavernier on blue paper and bound in gold tooled brown leather for Maria Porquin on behalf of her father Lowys Porquin.

A very special example: this beautiful and luxurious leather binding with gold tooled stamps of the capital letters M and D is a copy of a account on the travels of Maria de Medicis to the Netherlands. This particular copy was gifted to her. /1
