Finally, I just wanted to show how the sculptures on top of the theater in Herculaneum might have looked in situ, overlooking the city, reflecting the first rays of the sun every morning.
I produced the background of ancient #Herculaneum and Vesuvius using #Al.

Here's a little experiment in digitally reconstructing ancient bronzes. On the left is a reconstruction of the famous early-mid 1st c. CE statue of Livia from the theater of #Herculaneum, as it once might have looked, polished, with stone and glass eyes and bronze eyelashes. On the right is a photo of how it currently looks, with darkened bronze, and no eyes (due to both the heat of Vesuvius and 18th c. meddling). Photo by Dr. Steven Zucker, Smarthistory.org 1/

Correction: The scroll wasn't burned – obviously. A phase of no oxygen and a very high temperature in #Herculaneum during the 79 AD eruption carbonized objects of otherwise perishable stuff like wood and even papyrus, saving lots of invaluable stuff for posterity.
More than 2,000 years ago, extremely wealthy Romans lived on the sunny shores of the Bay of Naples at Pompeii and in opulent villas nearby, unconcerned about Mount Vesuvius in the distance. https://www.worldhistory.org/article/1552/a-visitors-guide-to-oplontis-stabiae--boscoreale/ #History #Herculaneum #Italy #Pompeii

Read texts on this scroll and win a total of $1,000,000.
The catch: You cannot unroll it. And it has been burned. 2000 years ago.
Using X-ray and such, one can ”read” scrolls without opening them. This has been done. To turn those readings into actual text, is another matter. That's why the challenge was posed. The hope is that creative and clever people will find a way, using AI or whatever it takes

#NatFriedman was the CEO of #Github form 2018 to 2021. Before that he started and sold two companies - Ximian and Xamarin. He is also the founder of #AIGrant and CA YIMBY. Most recently he created, funded #VesuviusChallenge - $1M prize for reading an unopened #Herculaneum #scroll for the very first time. If we can uncover these #scrolls, we may be able to recover lost #gospels, forgotten #epics, and missing works of #Aristotle. #VesuviusChallenge : https://scrollprize.org/ #EpicurianTradition

This is the most exciting news!Dr Sophie Hay: How exciting that a historical text has been found among the carbonised scrolls discovered in the Villa of the Papyri, #Herculaneum. And after being in the hands of L. Calpurnius Piso and then Napoleon it’s now under the scanning machines of Brent Seales. https://www.livescience.com/ai-is-deciphering-a-2000-year-old-lost-book-describing-life-after-alexander...
