'Ghosts of #Antarctica' is a reflective short film I made a while ago when the first facial animation #ml #ai systems came out, mixed with a bit of roll-your-own. The idea was to use these conjunctions to bring new life and emotion to the faces of #Australian #Antarctic scientists and explorers of the #HeroicEra in the early #TwentiethCentury. I loved the idea of seeing them looking back upon what they had achieved, the relationships between them (sometimes problematic) and a kind of fictive memory. An homage to the remarkable work of pioneering Australian cinematographer, #FrankHurley (1885-1962), 'Ghosts of Antarctica' uses #DeepLearning approaches to colourise and animate images from 100-year-old glass-plate photographs and film footage taken by Hurley and others during the 1911-14 #AustralasianAntarcticExpedition. #DigitalHeritage #DigitalHumanities #DigitalHistory #DigitalGhost #DouglasMawson
