On September 6, I went to Salt Plains National Wildlife refuge in Oklahoma, United States. The sky was hazy with smoke from distant fires and the light was redder than usual. I put some photos on my web server because they document birds even though they are not good photos.

A bluegill making eye contact with the great blue heron after being caught along the rocks at the Falls Lake Dam/Tailrace area located in Wake Forest, North Carolina.
This is a common spot for herons, ospreys and even bald eagles to catch fish as they release the water from the dam into the Neuse River.

I picked up a mate on the way in the hope that four eyes are better then two. Unfortunately, they weren’t and we couldn’t spot the bird in any of the trees and bushes overhanging the river. Still, it’s always good to be outside and there was other birdlife about including Kingfisher (at least two of them).
Back home for a cuppa and get ready for the Mighty Grecians game against Reading later.

A up close look at a great blue heron. I took this photo from the fishing pier at Shelley Lake in Raleigh, North Carolina
They are year around visitors to the Shelley Lake area. The great blue herons often have a rookery on the other side of the lake, and you can get a great view of the rookery from near the location of the eagle's nest.

Enhanced In Flight Great Blue Heron by Debra Martz Back in May when asked what I would like to do for Mother's Day....well, how about some bird watching! And so we did just that in Port Aransas, TX. This Great Blue Heron gave me a great photo opportunity when it flew by rather close to the observation deck at Leonabelle.

08/06/2023 Unlike other herons, a Green Heron keeps its head close to its body, hiding its long neck. It's a surprise when they extend it. The Heron kept amazing balance even as it stretched down. The neck kept an "S" curve in center leaving slack for the final thrust. It caught a Six-Spotted Fishing Spider. More from Brazos Bend State Park! A great blue heron braving the turbulent waters coming out of the spillway at the Falls Lake Dam/Tailrace in Wake Forest, North Carolina.
They were releasing a quite bit of water via the spillway. It didn't stop this great blue heron from landing in the river to begin his morning hunt for fish. I really love the waves here as it gives a more dramatic look.

I was at the local park and there is always a great blue heron that likes to sit on the fishing pier. As I went down to visit it I noticed it had just finished a meal of some sort and looked like it was going through the digestive process.
I had never really seen the tongue on a heron before, so this was quite fascinating.
