Am 13. März 1781, heute vor 242 Jahren, entdeckte Wilhelm Herschel Uranus.

Mit einem selbst gebauten Teleskop durchmusterte Herschel den Himmel und entdeckte Uranus, den er zunächst als Kometen einordnete. Nach weiteren Beobachtungen setzte sich in den folgenden Monaten die Ansicht durch, dass Uranus ein Planet ist und somit der erste nicht seit der Antike bekannte Planet.

Am 11. Januar 1787, heute vor 236 Jahren, entdeckte Wilhelm Herschel die Uranus-Monde Oberon und Titania.

Mit einem selbstgebauten Teleskop entdeckte er die ersten beiden Monde des sechs Jahre zuvor von ihm entdeckten Planeten.

Benannt wurden die Monde 1852 durch Herschels Sohn John Herschel nach Figuren aus Shakespeare-Werken, wie bis heute fast alle Uranus-Monde.
