“The word “#heuristic” was invoked all through the summer of 1956. Instead of trying to analyze the brain to develop #machine_intelligence, some participants focused on the operational steps needed to solve a given problem.”

Programmer's favourite statement:
> "Use heuristic detection of [...]"
also often known as:
> "I have no fucking clue what I am doing and I don't care"

Asking yourself "How quickly can I bust my own idea, rather than protecting it as a pet idea?" is a brilliant #heuristic to live with intellectual humility and explore a path to truly great insights.
And while I disagree that we'll get there anywhere close to 2030, I am glad he pivoted away from the #VR stuff towards this, and actively avoids the #groupthink that seems to be quite common there.
Marijn's episode is out! He brought up his heuristic "Do NOT rewrite from scratch if it is in production". We took a few loops, from code and software architecture, to business strategy and execution!

How is your Sunday? ☀️ This week we will have Marijn as our guest. Do you want to bet on the heuristic?
Hey there #gamedev and #UserResearch folks.
Do you know if there exist any website or ressource showing UX #CastStudies and/or #Heuristic evaluations of games ? I don't think I've seen any and it would be a great thing to show examples to people willing to have a better understanding of how they work

This is becoming a good #heuristic about people who tweet #NPC a lot.
RT @madhurchadha@twitter.com
Hypothesis: excessive usage of the word NPC is correlated with reduced sense of empathy.
It's hard to imagine other ppl living their own lives , making own decisions, having own stories ....in which you are just a passing shadow...

Extreme climate phenomena in Italy (source: #Legambiente, top Italian environmental NGO, published in La Stampa newspaper).
This exponential change takes place in a context of the #anchoring #heuristic of #behavioraleconomics: people's perceptions of risk and associated decisions and behaviors are based on historic experiences that are no longer valid.
Some decisions are not easy to quickly undo (e.g. move buildings). Intensive communications is required for the others.

Don't know about the “elementary” part but I think I first read about that particular #Heuristic in #Polya's #HowToSolveIt, where he remarks it working especially well in #Proofs by #MathematicalInduction, where it acts to #PrimeThePump of the #InductiveProof.
#Synchronicity being what it is, this came up just the other day in a more general setting ☟

Some heuristics that I've found useful:
What would have to be true for this to make sense?
Is it hypocrisy or is it a symptom?
While I am still a great fan of Kahneman's best seller "Thinking, fast and slow" (2011), here are refreshing views about the pervasive presentation of #decision making processes based on two orthogonal systems: type I (fast, unconscious, automatic, error prone) vs. type II (slow, conscious, costly, reliable). #psychology #cognition #heuristic #rationality #science

Nice article of theoretical ecology by the MAD group: the state of the internal reserve is an excellent proxy for foraging decision in fluctuating environment. Hey #fediverse, could you help me out here?
I'm working on some experiments based on two assumptions:
- Some information has decaying value;
- The amount of information that has decaying value is increasing rapidly.
It's somewhat early stage, so before I go down a rabbit hole, does anyone know of any prior art, or any articles or algos on a related topic?
Thanks!
