Final #hextag site visit of this trip. And I got to wear a hard hat for this one!
The convent of Recollects was founded in 1611 to provide a spiritual solution to the Basque witch-hunt. It's been used as office space for the port authority but is now being restored. Truly fascinating stuff. I'm so grateful to Amandine of the local patrimoine team for taking me along.
Art can be weird or maybe I'm just stupid.
Passed by the #hextag monument yesterday. It was a real epiphany. Had seen it before but didn't understand at all then what it was meant to be. Burning at the stake.
I wonder why I didn't see it the first time around? Maybe because it was raining, or because the red was just a bit redder then? (It hasn't aged well over the past 4 years...) Or maybe it was the black back plate?
What do people think?

Site visit day 3. I went to Mass! The two priests of the church of Saint Vincent in Ciboure were executed as #hextag witches in 1609. Both the balconies (for the men) and the ship are a standard part of churches in the French Basque Country. #histodons #earlymodons @histodons

Day 2 of my #hextag research trip. I climbed the peak of La Rhune (Larrun). Some stunning views of the Basque coast and inland Navarre. Witches were meant to congregate here and reportedly were able to get off in a single leap. #histodons @histodons
Day 1 of a short road trip. Visiting some sites near Bordeaux and in the Basque Country for my #hextag book project. My first stop today was the Tour de Montaigne where the great humanist wrote his Essays. (And yes, for whatever reason, it was 20C and sunny in Bordeaux mid November…) #historians #histodons @histodons
