"Why CRISPR babies are still too risky — embryo studies highlight challenges: While society grapples with the social and ethical implications of heritable genome editing, technical obstacles still abound."
Unpredictable deletions and insertions, loss of large parts of chromosomes are some of the errors researchers have observed. While they say research should continue, it's currently very unsafe to use these methods medically.

Today's post is about the Human Gene Editing Summit in London which I attended from afar, just some notes #HGEsummit https://blogs.nottingham.ac.uk/makingsciencepublic/2023/03/10/human-genome-editing-summit-london-2023/
Scientific presentations at #HGESummit on use of CRISPR for double-strand breaks (and as base editor) in embryo research, however, shows that we are a VERY long way from using this safely in germline applications. A range of unwanted on-target and off-target effects.
Relevant to today's #HGESummit (spoiler alert for non-attendees: it's already here).
Longest queue for questions so far at #HGESummit for Fyodor Urnov's presentation on an affordable way to address N=1 inborn immunity diseases through a platform which enables somatic genome editing without viral vectors. Quite a remarkable innovation if successful.
Would love to see more engagement with #HGESummit here but alas, seems we're all back to the birdapp...
#HGESummit Bingo. There were apparently a few "designer babies" protestors at the event this morning but otherwise quiet. Since I was sleeping, I sure hope the initial sessions will be available on video later.

Waiting for this to start...going to be an interesting three days.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the 3rd #HGESummit!
On the morning of Day 1 (today!) I’ll discuss three key governance trends in #China since the #CRISPR baby scandal in 2018.

Just landed in London.
Looking forward to three exciting days at The Crick Institute participating at the 3rd #HGESummit organized by The Royal Society and the US National Academy of Sciences sharing, learning and discussing the latest on #CRISPR genome editing on human beings. I will be representing #ARRIGE and #csic

It’s excellent to see Chinese academic communities jointly endorse such a clear and strong stand on #GenomeEditing and on He before the #HGESummit! Chinese version https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/RN3mElJqzYbFoIbJIJ72CQ. Below is a translation of their five key points
