A feeding Mud Snake flicks its red tongue to find prey. It had just been searching underwater in the pond among Cypress "knees".

This snake lives in Audubon Newhall Preserve, set aside in 1965 thanks to Caroline Newhall who recognized that #nature needed to be conserved amid resort-building on Hilton Head Island. Now over 140 bird species have been recorded at the Preserve.

One person made a difference here that affected seven generations.
