New Global Hibakusha blog post:

New post on the Global Hibakusha blog that includes audio for both of my two part interview on the Nuclear Hotseat podcast.

I talk about medical models of harm from radiation, how we have selected the irradiated (chosen test sites), pathologized anxiety about radiation and distributed fallout around the planet and into deep time.

Today marks 78 years since was devastated by an atomic bomb.

Simon @colly wrote a song, Paper Cranes, which documents a visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and describes an encounter with a survivor.

Today and every 6th August, Simon donates any profits to Stories, an organisation working to pass the legacy of the atomic bombings to a new generation.

Today is August 6

May those who didn’t have responsibility for the war (and even who had one)rest in peace.

We are talking about this a lot because most of surviving are aging. We are losing chance to learn. This is not the time to have fun.

Making film of Atomic bomb is really difficult because it will be a zombie movie.
Or tales of disappearance.
Or long long long story to the collapse.

"Not Seeing the Contaminated Forest for the Decontaminated Trees in Fukushima"

Abstract: This article explores how the models of medical risk from radiation established in the aftermath of the attacks on Hiroshima and are insufficient for understanding the risks faced by people in contaminated environments like Fukushima. These models focus exclusively on levels of external radiation, while the risk faced by people in areas affected by radioactive fallout comes from internalizing fallout particles. These models have helped to obscure the health impacts over the last 76 years of those exposed to fallout, from the people who experienced the Black Rain in , to the global exposed through nuclear testing, production and accidents, and now to those living where the plumes deposited radiation in .

I'll be in conversation with ISYP members about my book and work on global issues in an online event this Tuesday.

"On the basis of extensive research, including oral histories in over 20 radiation-affected communities, Bo reveals the many ripple effects from production, testing, and disasters. He connects these seemingly distinct legacies into one comprehensive global history of a slow-motion nuclear war.

In order to better understand this framing and delve into particular case studies, convenes a discussion event with Bo Jacobs on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at 11 am GMT / 7 am EST / 8 pm JST."

Online book talk tomorrow from University of :

In the fall of 1961, President Kennedy somberly warned Americans about deadly radioactive fallout clouds extending hundreds of miles from H‑bomb detonations, yet he approved ninety‑six US nuclear weapon tests for 1962. Since the attacks on & there have been over 2,000 nuclear tests; we envision the Cold War as a period in which nuclear weapons were not used when in fact statistically there was a nuclear detonation every 8.6 days between 1950-1989. Millions of people lived downwind from those nuclear tests, and tests raised radioactive fallout into the troposphere and stratosphere which eventuated in global distribution of radionuclides. Millions more lived near nuclear production sites, or accident sites like and . These are the “global .”

“Hiroshima court rejects lawsuit filed by children of hibakusha”

"The Hiroshima District Court on Feb. 7 dismissed a lawsuit that children of hibakusha filed seeking government compensation over their exclusion from a medical relief law that provides benefits for survivors of the atomic bomb.
It was the second time a court has issued such a ruling. In December 2022, the Nagasaki District Court dismissed a similar lawsuit.
The lawsuit in Hiroshima, filed by 28 plaintiffs, revolved around the Atomic Bomb Survivors’ Support Law, which provides a medical-assistance program for hibakusha but not for their children.”

Studying radiation impacts at Hiroshima & Nagasaki

The US wanted to better understand how much external radioactive waves people were exposed to in & so in the late 50s they began Project Ichiban.

They built several "Japanese style" houses at the Nevada Test Site and put up the BREN Tower. BREN stands for "Bare Reactor Experiment Nevada"

They put an unshielded reactor on an elevator on a tower, arrayed the "Japanese style" houses at various distances, turned on the reactor and measured how much radiation was shielded by the buildings.

This was to do "dose reconstruction" for all of the taking part in various health studies at the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission.

Below a photo of BREN Tower with various "houses" at the Nevada Test Site, and a pic of the, now, historical site.

2 primary forms of nuclear :

First two are: resource extraction (uranium mining) from indigenous lands; & the of defining a place as "empty" and inhabited by "nobody"

This can be seen in the siting of weapon testing sites, and nuclear production sites (plutonium & uranium processing)

H-bomb tests were so big, the three NATO weapon states all tested them on Pacific islands and atolls ( vs. the )

Soviet Union defined Kazakhs as "nomads" & detonated almost 500 nukes there
& never tested a single weapon in their own countries, only in colonial or spaces
China tested in territory

Millions of people lived close to nuclear weapon test sites and production sites, they experienced harm, displacement & contamination of their homes & food sources. Many remain contaminated today.

These are among the global

Sadako Sasaki (佐々木 禎子) was born in 1943. Two years later, she survived the Hiroshima nuclear blast, but later suffered from radiation poisoning, succumbing to her illness at the age of 12. Before her death, she folded over 1,000 cranes, hoping they would heal her. Her older brother continues to share her story and advocate for peace: sadakosasaki.com/meet-the-auth
