The HOA and neighbors (no doubt sympathizers) are always giving me "friendly" reminders that I have #poisonIvy in my yard.

A tropical conversation is like so:

You know you've got some poison ivy over here?

Well this has 3 leaves!

-- Every #plant has 3 leaves if you stop counting at 3. This plant has 5 leaves, and bark, and it's growing out of a #hickory nut.

Well it could be poison oak.

-- HICKORY NUT!

Any forest experts on here? I'm trying to turn my backyard forest into a healthy oak-hickory food forest and while I know what I need to get rid of (buckthorn, honeysuckle, creeping bellflower) I don't really know what the understory is *supposed* to look like.

Where should the shrubs/small trees be in relation to the big ones? What should go at the edges vs in the middle? Most of the info I've found by googling is geared toward managing a forest for logging which is obvs not helpful.

I used this company this year to trim the Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) in my back garden, and one of the company's arborists has a blog in which he recently discussed the efforts he went through to harvest native shellbark hickory nuts (Carya laciniosa) to make a holiday pie, and how the pie compared to his sister-in-law's pecan pie:
