Why can’t we have a 32” 5K monitor?

I loved my 27” 5K iMac Pro, but eventually wanted everything a bit larger for my aging eyes.

4K HiDPI at 27” seems alright for a secondary monitor, but I wish my primary monitor had the same 1440p HiDPI resolution, just at 32”.

It seems ridiculous the only options for 5K are 27” displays, and for anything larger you can only choose from 4K (my eyes!) or you jump straight to 6K/8K (my bank!).

My adventures with #wayland on Chromium and Electron apps have come to a halt. I am unable to scale the UI (not web page content) to my screen resolution.

Setting `--force-device-scale-factor` to more than 1.0 makes the window much smaller.

I give up. I will be sticking with xwayland on all things Chromium based for the time-being.

I am amazed that I have been able to make no progress WHATSOEVER in figuring out how to configure #sddm in #sericea. There's no documentation that I can find for it or #kinoite regarding where #sddm is configured.

So, for example, I cannot set #sddm for #hidpi.

Auf einem HiDPI Display ist die Schrift standardmässig sehr klein. Die Wahl der passenden Schriftart, schafft Abhilfe.

Nach dem Update auf @kde #Plasma 5.27 waren wieder die Schriftgrößen vermurkst...

qt, gtk, rohes X ... alles durcheinander. Zu groß, zu klein, unscharf.

Ursache ist ein Seiteneffekt von diesem Fix:

Habs jetzt "faul" gelöst und mein .profile / .bashrc prügelt das Enviroment auf:

export GDK_SCALE=1

Ich setze die Schriftgröße ansonsten klassisch über die DPI-Setting, weil das bei mir insgesamt am wenigsten buggy ist.

After their glitch today it seem there is no fu**ing Q/A before they even do update ....

Every time I enable `scale-monitor-framebuffer` in GNOME, I am relieved by the massively-improved mixed-DPI handling, and then let down by the pixelated handling of some apps. Slack, Signal, and a handful of non-native/Electron apps are just always blurry on HiDPI now.

Surely we can have the best of both worlds? 😭

This also exposes the reasoning for some of my decisions with Dippi; when first considering HiDPI at System76, we ended up using very similar logic to what Apple does for native DPI ranges on laptop and desktop computers. That's why Dippi infers the display type and changes the calculation as a result.

I’m also interested in this Samsung ViewFinity S9, as it’s more like my current Dell UltraSharp 27, but with a HiDPI resolution. According to Dippi, it is also “ideal for HiDPI.” Huzzah for reasonable decisions!

In case you were wondering, Dell’s newly-announced UltraSharp 32 6K display comes in at an “ideal for HiDPI” rating from Dippi!

If you are using RStudio on Linux on a Wayland compositor and you have a HiDPI monitor, you might be wondering why it's all blurry. I have some good news for you. I've been trying to get it to work for a while too and I finally did today.

From terminal, run RStudio using:
`rstudio --disable-gpu --enable-features=UseOzonePlatform --ozone-platform=wayland`

Regarding the continuing #iOS-ification of #macOS, I’ve come to the conclusion that the gap between advanced and general use will only widen with time. If there was a credible alternative to macOS on a laptop that gets all the basics right, I’d jump on it. A #Linux #desktop isn’t it. #HiDPI support is inconsistent, while external monitor support, suspend-and-resume and power optimization are all hacky at best. #Trackpad support is plain bad. I don’t want to have to be a mechanic to drive a car.
