"Elk calls have regional dialects
Whales, bats and birds sound different depending on where they live. So do elk, according to new research."
"Pennsylvania’s elk herds were translocated from the West in the early 1900s, and today they have longer tonal whistles and quieter bugles than elk in Colorado. Meanwhile, bugles change frequency from low to high tones more sharply in Wyoming than they do in Pennsylvania or Colorado."

My good friend and fellow #Navajo #journalist Alastair Bitsoi wrote this powerful piece for #highcountrynews!
‘Native mental health providers seek to heal boarding school scars with informed and appropriate treatment.’
Alastair is a huge proponent for #mentalhealth and going to #therapy. Something I’ve been putting off.

It's no secret that salmon are central to theh cultures of many Native nations in the Pacific Northwest, but outsiders don't really understand what that means. This piece by Native journalist 'Toastie' Oaster uses the words and photography of Yakama tribal member Lew George to open a little window on a life spent fishing for salmon on the Columbia River.

Black communities are moving to #Phoenix in historic numbers, but rising temperatures, drought, and decades of systemic racism make their new homes less livable.
In this #CapitalB and #HighCountryNews collaboration, Adam Mahoney spent time with South Phoenix families who exemplify the latest Great Migration of Black families in America. This time, their journey is up against an additional existential threat: #ClimateChange.

Hello everyone, the brilliant @wufei_yu has arrived!
Give him a #follow and also read his fantastic feature story for #HighCountryNews about how one California traced its history back to #NewMexico. It's a story that explores identity, culture and the ways Western towns targeted vibrant Chinese communities in the 19th century.
It's well worth your time and is a beautiful read: https://www.hcn.org/issues/54.4/history-how-a-california-archive-reconnected-a-new-mexico-family-with-it-chinese-roots #journalists #FollowJournalists

My hard copy of High Country News just dropped in my mailbox. I thumbed straight to the article on southern California's endemic black walnut trees. It hit home. I grew up in soCal in many ways. The trees grew on the hillsides where I roamed as a lad and on the hillsides that surrounded my college campus. I had a brief tryst with a Latina that lived in El Sereno, a single mom and me one quarter from graduating. It was good but not built to last. Long ago. #highcountrynews https://www.hcn.org/issues/55.1/south-social-justice-how-protecting-trees-can-fight-gentrification
