Weird question for #HigherEducation #faculty at universities where it isn’t the norm for undergrads to first-name their professors: How do you handle situations where students sit on committees with faculty?

It feels a little bit weird for all of us in the room to call each other by our first names except for the one undergrad who calls us “Prof. XYZ”—but OTOH it’s also a bit strange to tell the student to call us by our first names in this room but then go back to “Prof. XYZ” elsewhere.

"Florida professors were highly likely to seek jobs elsewhere. Of 642 surveyed faculty members, almost 300 said they will seek employment outside of the state in the next year, according to the United Faculty of Florida. A fifth, 20%, said they had already begun interviewing for those jobs since 2021."

As a Florida professor I can say that we are seeing this on the ground and that the university administrators are in complete denial.

Does anyone else have to deal with a university (which I'm sure receives plenty of federal $$$) whose staff routinely send out emails consisting entirely of an image and no text?

On a good day the alt text is "a picture. alt text generated automatically".

Hilariously, one year a new accessibility / #ADA compliance person sent some emails trying to get others to follow the law. She gave up after a few months.

FWIW, their tech security is even worse.

I think the Stanford authors of this NYT piece have it backwards.

Don't start a civics class with Great Books. Start with Great Problems, like energy or water. Then work backwards to see how, say, Kierkegaard’s writing about fear illuminates security concerns in the headlines. Then ask students to hold and evaluate Socratic dialogues with such thinkers using #ChatGPT
