🤓 Want to cultivate a high-performance team? Teach them the value of acting in the face of uncertainty. It's often where the most learning and growth occur.

I used to work because I was well treated, with great people in and managers I respected a lot. Not because the CEO wanted to treat me like sh*t

Even those that stay, won't respect now I suspect. What a debacle...

So what should we do instead?

We should look at the empirical evidence. That tells us a few things. One that's really important is that the organisational context has a much bigger impact on team performance than things like team cohesion. So we should:
- empower teams properly
- create a climate for creativity
- have a clear vision, simplifying team goals
- encourage lateral inter-team communication

But if you read the literature on group performance, stage models are a niche interest. Stages are seen as emergent properties of the underlying processes and it's these processes and the factors that shape them that are the focus of the research. I summarised the research here medium.com/@parserdigital/agil

This is important because it's these processes that actually create - not the stages.

So why is Tuckman so popular?

For those who don't know, Tuckman proposed a 4 (later 5) stage model of group development - teams go through Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing (and Ajourning).

It's a widely adopted model of team performance - particularly in the community. It's the go-to framework for - you need to guide them through these stages. It justifies long-running teams to maximise Performing.

I'll go through why it's wrong, why it's used, and what to use instead.

I thought I'd post a thread or two on some of my ideas around .

I'm going to start with a pet hate of mine: Tuckman's widely used team development model.

The problem is, was wrong.
