Happy birthdays to Edgar Allen Poe and Patricia Highsmith, #BOTD in 1809 and 1921 respectively. Both these writers had a peculiar knack for getting at the human tendency to give into our most irrational impulses — especially the ones that will undo us. They felt deeply the dread the nervous mind can attach to benign objects. And they wrote through a lens of synesthesia and addiction, while stacking up quite the body count between them.

Half a century after allegedly being kidnapped as a baby, a woman has been reunited with her family. Melissa #Highsmith was 21 months old in 1971 when her mother, Alta #Apantenco, hired a babysitter who allegedly took her from their home in Fort Worth, #Texas. Her family reported her missing to police and continued to search for her for 51 years. Following a tipoff they used the results of a #DNA test to confirm her identity and were reunited with her on Saturday.
