While I'd heard this point before, he re-emphasizes how much California is trying to invent HSR from scratch its own way, rather than learning from countries who have been much more successful at it for years. A high-speed rail line in California is chugging along towards 2030 debut

"Once selected and constructed, the high-speed trains would top out at 242 mph while traversing a 171-mile starter segment connecting Central Valley’s Bakersfield and Merced. Rail authorities will select the final manufacturer during the first quarter of 2024, with an eye to debut a pair of functioning prototypes by 2028 for trials."

Spain’s national rail operator has recently launched new routes connecting to major cities in France.

Big news today out of Texas: Amtrak is deepening its partnership with the private Texas Central Railway on their Dallas-Houston high speed rail project, potentially bringing in funding and financing from the US Federal Government.

This follows a long fallow period where Texas Central was stuck in litigation hell with rural landowners along its route (who no doubt had shadowy backers) and hostile Republican state representatives - not to mention COVID scaring away some of the private-sector financing that they were expecting.
