Masa harina is one of my staple foods for #backpacking #hiking #trekking #camping #bushcraft #woodcraft
For porridge, it cooks just as quickly and easily as instant oatmeal, and you can customize it to suit your tastes, make up little packets of different flavors at home

Taking the long way down the mountain through an old growth hemlock forest. The trees here are immense, 150+feet high. Footsteps are muffled by the forest duff and it’s nearly silent except for woodpeckers tapping away.

First image: mountain ash, Sorbus sitchensis, in its fall color already. 2 and 3: when a hemlock tree rots away, the cores from its branches are left behind like fossils.

Image 1: ancient hemlocks with the peak behind. Everything here is ancient and takes forever to grow. Image 2: the suspension bridge is out in place every July by the park service and taken down in September. The rest of the year the torrent coming off the glacier is too wide to cross. 3: the historic fire lookout of Oark Butte, a popular view point. 4: view of Baker Peak from the fire lookout.

First two images: pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) forms large blankets in the rocky parts of the meadows. It’s a kind of aster or daisy. Second two images are purple monkey flower (Mimulus lewisii), another wildflower that’s viable in the garden.

Corn lily on the left (Veratrum viride) looming a bit tattered this late in the season. On the right: does anyone know this plant? I’ve seen it before but can’t place it. Growing on a rocky stream side in part sun at about 5000 ft. It’s lovely.

Last weekend I had a chance to visit the Mt Baker Wilderness in Washington’s North Cascades. Follow along for a flora-heavy photo thread about Washington’s third highest peak.

Here's a short piece reflecting on experiences and emotions from a recent hike. Originally published in The Stoic, it opens up the question what a Stoic sense of joy can include

Views from my journey to work today. I say "work" rather loosely, as I'm retired but how can a day containing such views be really considered labour? In reality, I would work for free as walking in such scenery and showing people the beauty of the Alpujarra and the mountains is enough for me. Today with a group of Scots, Irish, English and Norwegians all enjoying the day. For me, it's truly a labour of love.

Cherry Run
- a tributary of West Branch Brandywine Creek, PA
This tributary was my 2nd target on Saturday 😊
Unlike Birch Run, which also converges into WB Brandywine half a mile upstream, this tributary’s water is only 1˚ C/2˚ F colder (Birch Run was 5˚ C/9˚ F colder) than the mainstream 🤔
A bit disappointed, but I checked this tributary a little bit, and decided to walk along the WB Brandywine 😊

Pictured: L-R The Carters and Wildcat viewed from Mt Madison over Mt Washington's Chandler Ridge on 9/9. 40 years ago today: A long climb up Mount Moriah passed over a bunch of open ledges. Someday, I would like to hike this entire section in nice weather. Today, the clouds had lifted slightly, revealing some hazy views along the ridge crest.

Final day of #hiking in the #Dolomites 😢. This time in the #Latemar group. A slightly different feeling because instead of wide views over the lower land, you are constantly enclosed by jagged walls and towers. Some of the most beautiful scenery I've seen so far.
More details in the 'Alt' texts.
