I love , but I will admit I have wondered if she has been dying her hair grey to look more stateswoman-like. Maybe about a year she had no grey. Then came the streak of grey. Now suddenly she is mostly grey. She is still in her early 40s. I understand some people go grey younger than others, but I also wouldn't put it past her to be intentionally projecting an image. She feeds on what the public thinks of her. There is no need. Everyone knows she is royalty.

Ok! Going to try bringing something in from the twitland that my favorite violinist, , started. This is my first . I’ve been playing a lot of viola, but recently one of her pegs started slipping, so here’s my attempt to practice a piece on the ! I worked on Bach’s Bourrée 1 in two parts because it was easy enough to read up a fifth 😅. A little clumsy, and it’s amazing how small the violin feels compared to the viola.

Some things I observed:

1. My bow arm is all over the place, I need to really focus on and improve my contact point 🫨
2. The trills in part one are uneven, and I should find a cadence I like and make it consistent across the repeat. 🎼
3. Just general memorization - recording made me extra anxious and having to double check with the score caused a few more pauses than I’d expected 🎶…🎶
4. That ending octave needs a whole tuning session to itself 😂

I’m open to other observations too! Happy playing 🎻

will be playing with the New York Philharmonic in Hong Kong. What really impresses me is that it will be televised for FREE as part of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. We don't get that privilege here.

The U.S. does poorly in promoting the arts, imho.

The Kennedy Center's 2023-2024 year has lot to offer this term with performances from , , and . Unfortunately, I am not in a position to a) take off of work and b) afford travel and hotel expenses to see them all. I likely will never get to see them perform. It is times like this that remind me how much I wish my life led down a different path that allowed my to stay in Maryland.

I've been listening to a lot of the last couple of days. When I listen to a Hahn album I haven't listened to in a while I am reminded that it is with good reason that so many people people, like myself, believe that Hahn is the finest working today, and has been for some time. When I think of the recordings available of great violinists before my time I realize that we are lucky to be alive the same time as her. It's true!
