The prompt was inspired by occasional folklore tales of dragons wound around hills - like the Lambton worm around Penhsaw Hill; or the Great Orme in Wales.

Nua-#CelticSoulJourney in #Wales: `#Moel-y-Gaer is a Prehistoric #hillfort crowning a peak of Llantysilio Mountain. It is a roughly oval 1.1ha enclosure, about 140m east-west by 100m. It is defined by a single rampart, sometimes ditched. The rampart, a stony bank up to 3.0m high, probably conceals a ruined drystone walled rampart. The ground falls away steeply on all sides save the east and here there is an in-turned entrance some 20m deep. Within the ramparts CPAT have identified at least eight building platforms which would have carried great thatched roundhouses. Hillforts such as this are characteristic of later Prehistoric settlement and were often occupied through the Roman period.`

He's a lumberjack and he's OK He sleeps all night and he works all day. I cut down trees, I eat my lunch I go to the lavatory...
Dendrochronological sampling day. The wood was hellishly hard.

News from the #Spycimierz excavation of the 11th-12th century ring fort.
We are still working on the remains of the rampart. Now it seems clear that we are dealing with a so-called box construction (in Polish we call it "izbice"). Boxes were built from horizontal logs and filled with sand, stones or clay. In our case, a kind of stockade was added just before the wall.

How it started and how it's going, Latvian #hillfort in Lelindricas edition. The sequence of uncovering wooden constructions of a rampart in our test pit (1 × 3 m).
At first we thought it was just a burnt tree trunk. Then it became clear we were dealing with woden construction. Now we hope for at least #radiocarbon dates if not some #dendrochronology.

The ramparts of Chesters Hill Fort in East Lothian. This Iron Age fortified village dates back some 2,000 years and is believed to have comprised a number of roundhouses occupying the fairly extensive upper area of the hill. Had a walk around the hillfort at Norton Fitzwarren this morning with the South West Heritage Trust and Emma Smith, an artist who has been commissioned to create a work for Castle Green in Taunton. The Trust now own the hillfort and have done a lot of work to make the banks and ditches, and particularly the entrances, much more open - which has brought on a sea of bluebells too. This is the holloway leading into the south eastern entrance.

A bit early for #HillfortsWednesday, but a year ago today I had a visit to Woodbury Hillfort above Great Witley in Worcestershire, as part of a walk around the Abberley Hills.
Much later than its Iron Age heyday, the fort was occupied by Owain Glyndwr in 1405, during his war with Henry IV.
