Published this a year ago today. The end of the winter, and the yearning for outdoor landscape life. Feeling the same now.

First archaeology publication written in Quarto (that I know of)!

Congratulations to the authors for their commitment to transparency and openness in archaeological science, here's to many more papers written using these excellent free and open source tools.

Although not exactly "high up" in the great scheme of things, being on top of an Iron Age Hillfort always makes me feel I'm on top of the world.

From Chalbury Hillfort, Dorset, UK, last summer.

rises near the western edge of ’s central plain, called Brega in early texts, now covering most of Co. Meath. A large series of earthworks forming a circular hillfort were likely topped with wooden palisades to form a protective wall. Four large banks fan out from the circle, forming a shape similar to the Rath of the Synods on Tara. Like other significant mountains in the midlands, Tlachtga is not tall or striking, but its summit offers a vista of almost half of Ireland. The mythic hills of Tara, Slane, and Loughcrew are visible on a clear day. Nearby are several wells, one of which has the unusual name of `s Well. It may be the source of the water known from an ancient poem as one of the appropriate offerings to the king at Tara.

The sunshine and blue sky really lifted my spirits today. A perfect day for a walk onto the iron age hillfort at Horton, South Gloucestershire to enjoy the panoramic views.

Wednesday
My list of the 52 Hillforts of Wiltshire.

sarsen.org/2022/10/the-52-hill

I visited them all in 2022 - some aren't accessible so I went as close as I could legally and safely. But where I could I walked within each one.

Thoroughly enjoyable way to visit the whole of Wiltshire and experience some wonderful places and views - I thoroughly recommend setting a goal of visiting them all.

I’ve always suspected (neither known nor believed) that in and were at least partially meant to keep cattle secure. This is drawn from poems about cattle raids being depicted as something akin to an D-Day. Seems like a giant cattle pen would make sense in that context.

We're littered with in the northern Cheviots.

This is an 1769 map of showing the belief of the time about these structures. I'm fascinated by the we've told about the landscape over the centuries, trying to make sense of what was under our feet and on our horizons.

In 1929, previous to the Western Morning News report shown in the post above, Dorothy Lidell's excavation of Hembury Hillfort was announced on p3 of the Proceedings of the Devon Archaeological Exploration Society, Vol 1, Part 1. The following two pages featured an account of the hillfort by Gertrude MacAlpine Woods as well as a larger, clearer version of the plan from A. Hadrian Allcroft's 'Earthwork of England.

On p85 of A. Hadrian Allcroft's book Earthwork of England: Prehistoric, Roman, Saxon, Danish, Norman, and Mediæval (Macmillan, 1908) is a plan of Hembury Fort near Honiton in Devon. Tipped into my copy was this clipping from The Western Morning News, 27th July 1930, regarding early successes resulting from Dorothy Lidell's excavation of the hillfort which ran from 1930 to 1935.

It was a frosty but sunny one this morning, mist lifting out of the river valley and lingering around the hills.

Shadows of the past are hidden in the landscape, invisible unless you know. Old plough lines lie under the flood water, and where I stood was a farm in the 18th and 19th centuries, now vanished. And the sharp tips of the hills are the ancient walls of
