She told me she needed to go to Asheville to find musicians who played traditional American music for a song she wrote for a PBS documentary. I laughed and said she didn’t need to go to Asheville to find them. Indeed I made a quick call to Hank Smith and Pattie Hopkins, two of the finest traditional musicians in the US. A week later we had the final version of her track.

I studied #Hindustani #tala for a few years with Maya Misra, widow of Pt Ramesh Misra. Tala (or taal) is the system of counting beat cycles using the various sounds (bols) that a tabla makes. A few years ago I presented a lecture on the most basic taals. Each tala has a characteristic set of bols (called the theka). After you learn the theka, you practice accelerating how many bols are on a beat.

Beautiful Raag #Desh on a #slideguitar. The instrument is a Ghandharvi, which is basically a 12-string western #guitar with two extra chikari (drone) strings. Desh is arguably the most popular raag in #Hindustani Classical music. John McLaughlin has declared that Debashish “has no equal” on slide guitar.

An example would be #India after partition. #Hindustani a language close to #Urdu was replaced by #Hindi which underwent gradually a process of #Sanskritisation in which words were introduced into it.

Bhimpalasi is based on Kafi thaat (Dorian in western terms) but the ascending line does not include the second or 6th degree. Descending lines can include all 7 pitches.

Families are not raags themselves. Raags are more complicated than just the scale, with strict rules for the order of notes, which notes can be ornamented, which can be connected by glides, and which must be emphasized.
