A recent Maharashtra government move to track interfaith marriages is meant to either stop ‘love jihad’ or reconcile women ‘estranged’ from their families. Whichever of these objectives the government hopes to achieve, it is illegal and unconstitutional, denying women the right to liberty and equality; exposes them to further risks; and sends a clear message—if you marry outside your faith, the State will be watching.
