I also did this write up a while ago, although it can probably do with an update: https://www.johnnyblanchard.com/2022/11/07/mastodon-and-the-fediverse/
Another influx of new members to the Fediverse and so I'll share some more #HintsAndTips
1. Use HashTags frequently, they're the best way to discover people with the same interests and to get discovered.
2. Drop an introduction to yourself using the introduction hashtag and make sure you liberally use hashtags of all the things you talk about
3. When using HashTags make sure to capitalise each word so screen readers can make better sense of them
Another example is adding alt text to any images you use. This enables people who need to use screen readers to enjoy your toots with everyone else, and don’t forget to use proper case in hashtags so they are understood by screen readers better #HintsAndTips
The Fediverse is trying to be something different on the internet and so it has slightly different guidelines than you might be used to. For instance, here on Mastodon we ask that you put content warnings on potentially contentious posts, this can include political and sexual toots. These aren’t designed to stop people reading your messages, just give people the option not to if they prefer. #HintsAndTips
Finding people here can be tricky, there’s no algorithm pushing posts on to your stream, the very best way is to use hashtags. Make sure your posts include relevant tags and you can follow tags to discover people interested in the same things. #HintsAndTips
Mastodon is just a very small part of the fediverse, there are many other great apps that can help you escape the centralised world https://fediverse.party/ #HintsAndTips
Remember to add alt text to your pictures, this is so people with any sight-related disabilities can enjoy your messages just like everyone else. Also make sure to capitalise each word in a hashtag so screen-readers can read them better #HintsAndTips
Don't forget to use content warnings for anything that might be contentious, including politics. This doesn't stop people seeing your messages, but it does let people choose if they want to read them #HintsAndTips
If you're new to Mastodon then you might be a little overwhelmed. Remember to use hashtags in tweets and for searching, it's the easiest way to find people and leave a message in #introduction including hashtags for the things you're interested in so people can find you #HintsAndTips
The Fediverse isn’t just Mastodon, indeed it’s existed for a lot longer and many other useful apps have been built around it. If you want to escape a centralised site then check out https://fediverse.party and there’s a good chance you’ll find an alternative #HintsAndTips

If you're new to Mastodon and want to fill your timeline there are a few ways to do it:
1) Leave an introduction under the #introduction hashtag, make sure to add hashtags for all your interests, and make sure you scan it to find people who share them.
2) You can follow hashtags, just search for them in the search box, click on the ones you like and you'll find an add button in the top-right.
Enjoy the Fediverse!
If anyone tells you that Mastodon is a silo here's some proof that it isn't, my tiny instance only has 41 active users, but I'm following 826 people and I'm followed by 821
Use hashtags to advertise yourself and find others, follow follow follow and interact. This isn't a standard social network, nobody is going to find people for you #HintsAndTips
If you see people struggling to join Mastodon please direct them to join less populated instances, the joy of federation is there are lots of servers.
Try https://instances.social to find others
If they’re into #retrogaming or #retrocomputing out little instance still has some space https://retrochat.online #HintsAndTips

We’re trying to create a better, more diverse, more open, community here
We ask that you use content warnings on anything that might be contentious - we do this so you can post what you want and people can decide whether to read it or not
We ask that you add alt text to photos - we do this so people with sight issues can enjoy your toots as much as everyone else
We know you won’t always remember, we just ask that you try
As i've just been talking about it, think of the Fediverse as (as it's name implies) a universe, in that universe we have planets. Mastodon is one of those planets, but there are many more, all interconnected by the interstellar shuttle service of ActivityPub.
I do recommend checking out everything else available, whilst you will have to create a new account on each one, you'll be able to follow and share data between each https://fediverse.party/ #HintsAndTips
Gamechanger: Put a heated blanket on your sofa, put a blanket over you. It doesn't take long to heat up, and you can turn it off again. It's also great for fur babies.

Ok, I'm apparently ok at drawing animals but terrible at drawing anime people. Any hints and tips? #Art #Anime #hintsandtips
Interested to know how others prepare for an event/race.
I've created a 'race checklist' template within a to-do list app, categorising the tasks I need to do for race week; the night before, race day etc.
When I sign up for a race I then create a 'project' from that template and use this to make sure I have everything in place come race day.
It's not quite working for me. It might be the list is incomplete? Maybe there's a better way?
