Today in Labor History February 25, 1870: Hiram Rhodes Revels was sworn into the U.S. Senate, becoming the first African American ever to sit in Congress. He was a Republican from Mississippi. His cousins were killed participating in John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry. During the Civil War, he helped recruit and organize two black Union regiments.

#OnThisDay in 1870, Republican Hiram Rhodes Revels from Natchez was sworn into the U.S. Senate representing Mississippi, becoming the first African American to sit in the U.S. Congress.

Revels, who raised two Black regiments during the Civil War and served as a Union army chaplain, won the seat formerly occupied by former Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
