Greg Abbott’s education commissioner announced today that the state government will take control of Houston’s public school district.

HISD (Houston Independent School District) was previously controlled by local Democratic education officials, but the Republican Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, has been moving towards a takeover since 2019.

HISD has roughly 200,000 students enrolled, making it the eighth-largest in the nation.
