Daniel Hough was the first soldier to die in the American Civil War. Hough, an Irish immigrant, served in the Battle of Ft Sumter (April 12-13, 1861) and survived. However on April 14, Hough was killed when a gun exploded during the 100 gun salute following the surrender of the fort and was killed instantly.
