Today is the anniversary of the , in 1864, when hundreds of Cheyenne, mostly women & children, were shot & hacked to pieces by U.S. Colonel John Chivington & 700 of his men who invaded the village under cover of night.

The Cheyenne were camped under a flag of peace.

U.S. Captain Silas Soule & Lieutenant Joseph Cramer refused to participate in the act of genocide & ordered their men to stand down. In a letter to his mother, Soule wrote that +300 Cheyenne were massacred that day & that “most of them were women and children.”

Soule’s account in a separate letter to an army major reveals just how grisly the massacre was. “Hundreds of women and children were coming towards us, and getting on their knees for mercy,” only to be shot and “have their brains beat out by men professing to be civilized.”

Abraham Lincoln was, of course, President.

H/t Ruth Robertson.
