I'm Alaska born and raised, but have lived in various parts of the US, London, and western Germany, now residing in the mountains of Hochsauerland.

Ferrets are better than cable. I would love to have an entire menagerie of pets. (Working on this.)

Updated #Introduction - I'm a #historian on faculty at Laurentian University in #Canada. I publish on #PopCulture and #EarlyModern topics. I teach #CrimeHistory along with whatever else is needed from those fields that I know well.

My hobbies include #CrossStitch, #RPG (mostly D&D 5e), & catering to my #cats.

But, even as a trained #historian that considers the creation of alternate history a fundamentally separated activity from writing history, I actually do think that alternate history, or allohistory as it's sometimes called, has significant value.

Both for layperson and trained historian alike, it can act as a reminder that the human past was not a set narrative with predetermined outcomes. That history was not fated nor foretold. I genuinely think this is a vital thing to remember at all times

Could a #historian give me some info or point me to a good resource to answer these 19th century logistics questions please? Any help greatly appreciated!

I need to know how someone of comfortable wealth would have travelled from London to Japan in summer 1858. By steamship I presume, but often did the ships depart, which ports would they have left from and arrived in, was it a direct journey or where would they stop over/change ships, how long would the journey take, was it a pleasant experience, special visa/entry arrangements.

Adjacent to those logistics, would it have been likely/plausible for a casual traveller to visit then, given Japan had only just opened to trade, and would the locals have been friendly or resentful?
