The Dambulla caves are the largest preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, dating 1st century BC! The Buddha statues were added in the 12th century.

New to Mastodon so a little - I’m a sometime archaeologist, previously working in for the built environment & sectors.

Now post-PhD (landscapes of social reform, University of York) & working in an role in in southwest England but still researching/writing on whenever I can.

, nerd, & dabbler in photography & music (mainly guitar). Prone to map geekery.

New Year’s Day 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the (beginning of the) Rosewood Massacre, when violence broke out in the prosperous, mostly African American town after a Black man was falsely accused of assault by a white woman in nearby Sumner. Over the next week, at least eight people would be killed and every Black-owned building burned to the ground.

I was discussing historical archaeology last night with my daughter (a teacher), which reminded me of one of my favorite student papers: an in-depth study (literally) of the layers of history revealed by a pothole on Benefit Street in Providence.

Today I excitedly received several digitized copies of a hard-to-find occult magazine from the 1920s called The Glass Hive 🤩 It was published by one of Brother XII's early high-ranking disciples (who left the Aquarian Foundation pretty quickly), & Brother XII used it to publish Aquarian Foundation info before they had their own magazine. These issues include interesting insight into the early days of the Aq Foundation's time in Canada!

Excitedly I woke up to an email with digitized copies of two issues of a very hard-to-find occult magazine that I've been trying to track down, for its Brother XII content 👀

One interesting inclusion is an explanation for the triangle symbol. B12 sometimes signed off with a little triangle symbol, as seen in the example on the left (1927). I wondered what that meant. Fortunately he shares an explanation in one of the the new-to-me magazine articles (1927)!
