In 1862, the King of Siam (as it was formally known) sent several gifts to the American People, and offered President a large number of elephants for use during the Civil War. The offer was politely declined due to logistics and advances made in steam transportation at the time. The act of generosity was widely forgotten in history, but the gifts and letters written back and forth now sit in the National Archives.

During World War II, red lips were seen as a bold act of defiance. Adolf Hitler famously “hated red lipstick.” In Allied countries, wearing it became a sign of patriotism and a statement against facism.
The American government tapped Elizabeth Arden to create a standard issue lip color for women in service. Her "Montezuma Red" matched and accentuated their uniforms' red piping.

From 1912 to 1948, the Olympic Games held competitions in the fine arts. Medals were given for literature, architecture, sculpture, painting, and music. Obviously, the art created was required to be Olympic-themed.

Muhammad Ali Vs. Sonny Liston- Neil Leifer
on May 25, 1965, as 23-year-old heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali squared off against 34-year-old Sonny Liston, the man he’d snatched the title from the previous year. One minute and 44 seconds into the first round, Ali’s right fist connected with Liston’s chin and Liston went down. Leifer snapped the photo of the champ towering over his vanquished opponent and taunting him, “Get up and fight, sucker!”

It’s the most perilous yet playful lunch break ever captured: 11 men casually eating, chatting and sneaking a smoke as if they weren’t 840 feet above Manhattan with nothing but a thin beam keeping them aloft. That comfort is real; the men are among the construction workers who helped build Rockefeller Center. The picture, taken on the 69th floor of the flagship RCA Building, was staged as part of a promotional campaign for the massive skyscraper complex.

This is the modern Mona Lisa and quite possibly the most famous photo of them all. It is not just the face of Sharbat Gula, the young woman in a refugee camp, but also the face of an entire nation ravaged by war. Her eyes shook the entire world when the portrait appeared on the cover of Nation Geographic.
The Afghan Girl (1984)- Steve McCurry.

The World’s First Selfie (1839). This is one of the earliest known photographs of a human. A self portrait taken in 1839, it shows a young Robert Cornelius (1809-1893) standing outside his family’s lamp-making shop in Philadelphia.

Napoleon Was Once Attacked By a Horde of Bunnies. The emperor had requested that a rabbit hunt be arranged for himself and his men. His chief of staff set it up and had men round up reportedly 3,000 rabbits for the occasion. When the rabbits were released from their cages, the hunt was ready to go. But the bunnies charged toward Bonaparte and his men in a viscous and unstoppable onslaught. And we were taught that Waterloo was the conqueror's greatest defeat…

Roman emperor Caligula planned to make his favourite horse a senator. He loved his horse Incitatus so much that he gave him an ivory manger to sleep in, and even a palace with his own servants! When you’ve heard some of the other downright bizarre things this short-lived emperor did during his reign, you’ll realise that Caligula's strange relationship with his horse was one of the more normal things about him, TBH.
