Today I explored the old Northwestern Pacific Railway just outside of Monte Rio. I followed it up to where it crossed the Russian River. My historical map is fully accurate, as I could also see where it crossed the river.

Seems like there is a side spur that heads south. Requires more investigation. Photos next.

And a local historian who I often chatted with has just appeared on screen in the programme. I spent a year 2003-4 working half time as a #ResearchAssistant on Bob Harris’s Small Towns project. Reinstalled MySQL on my new Mac laptop and imported my old library borrowings etc. databases from my Dundee University history PhD. Pleased to see the SQL queries in my thesis appendix still worked! Perhaps because I approach history like an anthropologist, I am never happier than when I am reading an old newspaper, which allows me to wander in the "field" of a past culture, encountering a panoply of events, concerns, images, and voices, only half of which I understand. Finding Mastodon was such a timely, and happy accident. It's a fantastic #opensource project that I want to support and see it succeed.
