I spent some time today revisiting the tailoring from my thesis project on the digital reconstruction of clothing recovered from a Civil War submarine called the H. L. Hunley. I'm much happier with the neckerchief and shirt interaction now! Next up, fixing those awkward trouser pockets.

Some of you asked for a pocket #sewalong, so here we go! I’m making up my own construction, as pockets are very simple. I’m doing a 4 layer construction: decorative embroidered front (cotton/poly blend, I’m pretty sure), inner lining (cotton) and back in a sturdy cotton canvas. I want to avoid binding because I hate sewing on binding. I’m machine sewing these, as I generally machine sew first attempts for efficiency. #historicalcostuming #historicalsewing #18thC

My pinking shears need sharpening but my kit is downstairs, so I'm experimenting pinking manually to see how/if it works on this cover for containing the bits of a peeling office chair.

The zigzaginess cuts diagonally across the weave (on the bias) to prevent fraying. Surely the technique existed before pinking shears were sold. It's not as slow as I would've expected, but I'm taking big cuts here ig

Finally making stuffing for a little pillow inspired by #BernadetteBanner's videos on #historicalsewing. Cabbage (the historical name for scrap fabric from which Cabbage Patch Kids get their name) becomes "coleslaw" becomes pillows. Not an ounce of fabric wasted.

Also, I love how she uses old-fashioned vocabulary very effectively, and her handwriting is just gorgeous. But mainly, all that diligent hand-stitching :blobaww:

She seriously inspires me to take seam finishing more seriously on my projects that aren't going to be knit fabrics.
