Thinking of Roy Porter today. I saw him speak in London only a few years before his premature death in 2002 at the age of 56, I regret that I didn’t come up and introduce myself. This is of course very elitist that’s why I want to create a spot light on them. Especially as it was about being non conforming which I am.

Ibn Khaldun was a scholar, a politician, a diplomat, and a public intellectual of what we in the West call the medieval era. He wrote a theory of history called the Muqaddimah, which is grounded in #Islamic belief and informed by his experiences and observations in the #Maghrib, both North Africa and #Andalucia.
If you're into #History, #Epistemology (how we think we know what we know), #Historiography, the MENA region past and present (especially the #Maghrib), do have a listen. This is NOT a dry academic tome AT ALL.

I am old enough to remember the teaching of history in epochs. Though much frowned on these days, epochs are effective in conveying the notion that periods in history can and do have themes and motifs.
