N.B. This is NOT an image of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831-1895), the first Black woman to earn an MD in the U.S. It is Mary Eliza Mahoney (1845-1926), the first professionally trained African American nurse in the U.S. No images of Crumpler taken during her lifetime are known to exist. Be careful because several websites and publications mistake Mahoney for Crumpler.

"The emphasis in the Qur’an to save lives combined with Prophet Muhammad’s charitable approach to health care led to what later developed into bimaristans, a new type of medical-cum-charitable institution, where sick people of all backgrounds could be treated for free. The first mobile dispensary that was set up by Muhammad took the form of a tent at the battle of Khandaq (circa 627), wherein RufaidabintSa’ad, the first female Muslim nurse, treated the wounded."

will argue that the crematoriums at Auschwitz were actually dynamited by the Soviets. This is without evidence, and evidence for destruction by the Nazis is cited by Robert Jan Van Pelt in his rebuttal to Germar Rudolf:

Deniers ignore aerial photographs showing Nazis dismantling the crematoriums.

Historians: why are people in the UK/England so obsessed with the Tudors? Surely the following period - the ‘long’ seventeenth century (1603-1714) - is more interesting and helpful in understanding the country today? Civil wars, beginnings of a global empire and the shameful expansion of human slavery, Interregnum and Restoration, plague, Great Fire, Gunpowder Plot, Bill of Rights, end of divine right to rule, the creation of Great Britain … etc.

I am thinking of doing next semester a class (seminar style) on the history of the media from the printing press to the digital age. Any suggestions for topics to cover and suitable English-language readings?

Does anybody want to share their syllabus?

Many thanks in advance!

*Be very careful what you say. I don't get angry but I will not put up with being insulted.*.

I never denied the brown shirts affected what happened but then you have to ask *yourself* what was different about Germany vs. the U.S. and the UK who *also* had the equivalent of brownshirts?
Let's go with the UK's Oswald Mosley and Blackshirts Unfortunately there was a lot of support during WW2 for the Nazis in the U.K. :britannica.com/biography/Oswal (. For further reading of Nazi sympathizers in the USA read historyhub.history.gov/thread/
It's a classic case of *democratic* means being taken advantage of with the Nazis brownshirts finishing the job.

"Historically, fascist leaders have often come to power through democratic elections." -- Jason Stanley, "How Fascism Works"

(Popper, Machiavelli even warned of this no not in that book the Discourses, ...)

Personally I wouldn't use Wikipedia articles for *anything* serious.

John Dewey was arguing the difference was Culture. The Echo of history we are seeing today is the rise of neo-nazis bringing back tactics that were used in WW2. We must be vigilant to fight

I am for anti-fascism are you? Yes or no?

Never let it be said that you can't look glam *and* weld.

The lockers at the Oxfordshire History Centre have fab photographs fixed to them of documents and images in their collections. This one is of a woman working in the Morris Motors works in Cowley in 1943. There are more from the same time in their digitised collections

My newest video is out now! The First World War was full of technology and machines, but there was one piece of equipment that I don't think the Allies could have won without: the passenger liner. This video presents my argument as to how and why ocean liners made the difference for the Allies. Prepare to be dazzle-painted!

The Public Universal Friend [1752 – 1819] was an American preacher born in Cumberland, Rhode Island, to Quaker parents. After suffering a severe illness in 1776, the Friend claimed to have died and been reanimated as a genderless evangelist named the Public Universal Friend, and afterward shunned both birth name and gendered pronouns. In androgynous clothes, the Friend preached throughout the northeastern United States, attracting many followers who became the Society of Universal Friends.

The Friend's theology was broadly similar to that of most Quakers. The Friend stressed free will, opposed slavery, and supported sexual abstinence. The most committed members of the Society of Universal Friends were a group of unmarried women who took leading roles in their households and community.

I have discovered early medieval Ireland, and holy shit, if there is ever a land to retreat into to avoid the modern world, this is it. The fragile political structure, the tensions of paganism vs. Christianity, the simple way of life of most people...I want to read every book ever written on this period.

You can tell that you're a medievalist at heart if, when called upon to teach modern U.S. history, your can't help referring to the 41st and 43rd Presidents as "Bush I" and "Bush II" as if they were medieval kings.

A yet undersigned site I'm keen to get sent to Historic Scotland as soon as I find the time to do a write-up. Obviously can't disclose the location but I am cautiously quite excited by its potential!

Heavy rock fall with the interior passage with some extremely strong evidence of previous occupation within the same locale. A potential first for the upper Tweed valley if confirmed.
