Not that I want to be catcalled, but if I'm going to be catcalled while wearing homemade striped stays to Pride, I'm annoyed that this dude just commented on my legs.

Today I was walking my dog with my full #1700s #jacobite gear on and someone in my apartment complex was curious about #historybounding like “I wish I could dress more than just basic, I wish I knew someone that cool lived here”.
I always love those moments because I get to be like “you can!! Just rid yourself of the belief that you have to dress ‘normal’ and the sky’s the limit!!”
Break free of conventional fashion! Be your best self! Be a trend setter!!

After much searching, I have found a scanned archive copy of Anna Muthesius' Das Eigenkleid der Frau, being a 1903 seminal work on aesthetic/art reform dress, with cover design by Frances MacDonald MacNair of the Glasgow Four / Glasgow School of Art
It's here, if you want to see it too

It occurs to me I should be tagging these posts with #sewing and #historybounding so they’re findable again.
@BluRae one of the #HistoryBounding youtubers did a tie-dyed 18th century gown. She called it her Chemise a la Reine-bow 🌈
@msquebanh Bernadette Banner’s new(ish) book would be my recommendation for hand sewing. I haven’t read it yet but I watched her “making of” video and it’s based on traditional hand sewing techniques for making your own clothing before machines were common, and goes in depth with advice on how to do that effectively. Most modern books assume you’ll be needing hand sewing only for fiddly or decorative bits, and don’t go deep enough (IMHO) on the basics.
Also Banner is herself disabled (scoliosis, wears a corset-like brace) and I’ve seen her talking about adaptive clothing as well as ergonomics and things, so I would expect her book to have at least some awareness of that sort of thing.

Would anyone in #historicaldress #sewing #historicalcostuming #reenactment or #historyBounding etc know where you can get reviews of the various #books available? Mostly what’s actually in them - actual patterns or detail images or quotes/diagrams from contemporary sources etc - as opposed to their ‘quality’. It’s really hard to judge if the has what you need when you can only see the covers on the internet and descriptions are frequently vague at best.

@alexbayleaf @histodons @sewing I’d love to see what ppl are doing. I drool over the Past Patterns site. #historyBounding
Hey @sewing, are you interested in #HistoryBounding ? That is, making and wearing clothes in your daily life that are inspired by #HistoricalFashion? If so, please use the hashtag so we can find each other!
Shoutout to @histodons too, especially anyone doing #LivingHistory or #ExperimentalArchaeology, and to anyone interested in #SlowFashion.

@Snu @sinituulia also @bethwinegarner is a #HistoryBounding friend of mine and also doing fascinating research into the historic #cemeteries of #SanFrancisco.

@Snu i hope we can get more #HistoryBounding folks over here in time! I feel like the visual parts of mastodon have sort of the vibe of Instagram at its best, somehow? (Like, old school pictures instagram, not reels and all that. I basically haven’t used Insta much since they started using an algorithm and putting ads all through it.)
Linen cravates, got one in white, coffee, and moss green
So further developments in the #historybounding coat - I knew I wanted this cute pointed collar affair that appeared in the late 1770’s, and in a moment of epic ‘omg why did I not think of this before?!?’ I realised if there were extant examples in stripe fabrics I could just see how they were oriented on grain!
I am more confused than ever.

My first ever sewing creation is this 18th century shirt.
It goes surprisingly well with my more modern waistcoat, but I will one day work up to making a period correct waistcoat as well.

Yeah, the picture quality is a bit bad. I know.

Sunday #sewing realization: if I don't like the way the bodice on my #1780sLoki dress wrinkles, I can just.... add a boning channel? It's allowed?
This is growth, y'all. I'm still learning, but I think that problem solving is proof I'm becoming a better sewist.
