Here's Port Adelaide in the 1840s.

Use the interactive map to see the port from the (literal) points of view of colonial artists. Overlaid on an historical map.

I've just updated this map - first developed in 2020 - with new content and a nicer "feel". (Best with computer or tablet, not phone.)

Turns out there was economic depression in 1848 (Britain) and it would have affected demand for art. (Having written about the downturn in the 1849 chapter I should have remembered this!)

To get a further handle on its impact I used @wragge's QueryPic - thanks Tim! - to graph use of the word "depression" in - in this case - South Australian newspapers from 1839 to 1851.

The graph's October 1848 peak is really obvious. Also shows the late 1840s copper boom and December 1851 gold rush.

Tool: glam-workbench.net/trove-newsp (You'll need a TroveAPI key.)

Image: frequency chart of "depression" mentions in South Australian newspapers from 1839 to 1851.

Hear Australia as a “middle power”? Think “subimperial power”.
Hear “rules-based international order”? Think “US-led imperial order”.

In “Subimperial Power: Australia in the International Arena”, author Clinton Fernandes argues simply, concisely and convincingly this view of Australia’s place in the world.

Includes: history, British empire, free trade, resource export economy, military involvements, AUKUS, China, submarines.

Just finished reading. Thanks @luciedigitalni for recommending this book.

Unexpectedly came across 1860 photos of Burke and Wills expedition and camels (and drivers) in Royal Park before departure. Photos and sketches are in an album of colonial artist William Strutt.

After 185 years Colonel William Light's map of Adelaide is now digital. His "Plan of the City..." includes the names of the original purchasers of the 1042 acre sections. Zoom in to an acre to see its buyer. See how many acres the great OG bought. Search by name.

The Light/Gliddon map was published in 1837, not 1840 as is often catalogued. It is the earliest published map of Adelaide and its individual acres.

I was once called an “interstate amateur art historian” in the press. My partner then gave me this T-shirt. I don’t think of myself as an historian, but I do admit to being interstate!

I think of myself more as an analyst in an historical sandpit. Also an “undollared scholar”.

I just finished reading “Rising Tensions in the New Age of the Everyman (and -woman) Historian: Why I’m Reluctant to Claim the Title Historian”, a chapter by Paul Daley in “The Australian History Industry” (2022).

Daley: “Labels, ultimately matter little. It’s what you bring to the table that counts. And there are plenty of seats.“

Borrowed from Libraries ACT.

Here's an interesting example of historical mapping taking form - century old detailed maps of St Kilda streets and buildings from the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) - digitised and overlayed on a modern map. It's early days - just put into a mosaic today. I think it'll benefit from cropping the map sheet images for a better overlap. (I georeference PROV maps as a volunteer. It can range in difficulty from the easy to a hard historical research task.)
