Does anyone know of any relationship between Bill Gates / Microsoft with Ronald Reagan? Did Microsoft have any meaningful contact with congress or executive during Reagan years? Anything helps here.

A quick Google search turned up nothing, but I would be interested in learning about of the psychology surrounding the current and historical popularity of computer programming languages.

A study in 1981 suggested that the programming language was secondary to the skill of the person using the language. doi.org/10.1145/356835.356840

I’m particularly interested in learning how to properly shame the use of PHP.

“Beyond Word Processing: The Online Text System” (1979-10-03)

Very interesting memo by David Casseres on what what could perhaps be called “NLS-style text editing” in the context of Jef Raskin’s original Macintosh project (i.e., before Steve Jobs took over).

For the last session of my (new) course on the “History of Computing,” we visited the Musée Bolo museebolo.ch/?lang=en

I was positivley surprised that almost all of them were there, so this is really a topic that interests them. This also confirms that it was a good decision to create this course (which was partly also due to student feedback).

The guest talks by @barbara_hof and Moritz Feichtinger were also very much appreciated!

It was over 50 years ago that I first used a computer: a CDC 6600 “supercomputer” that I accessed at 110 bps (0.000110 Mbps) from a teletype at my junior high school in Houston. (Our smartphones are many times more powerful than that supercomputer.)

Also got Claire Evans “The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the Internet”. Women in tech deserves more recognition than what the history books and the media provide.

@ross they used maths by hand, then computers - they built their own ICs and computers for the purpose, helping to kick-start the US computing industry.

People looking for historical context for the Twitter migration might be interested in the story of IBM and BUNCH (later 'the Seven Dwarves').

The period from the 1960s to the 1980s witnessed a huge amount of startup activity in the tech sector followed by competition, buy-outs, and failures that left IBM dominant (until the rise of Microsoft and Apple): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BUNCH

Alright any work on the history of 'user centred design'? I'm familiar with some disability history that concerns this. But I'm particularly interested in its ebbs and flows out of software development into everything else. I know the potted canonical story (often interwoven with 'agile' v 'waterfall'). But I'd like something from a critical perspective. Funny I also think it may matter for what is happening to

Not sure how many of you know Adam Osborne. He created the first luggable computer and became a publisher for a lot of key books in the 80s under Osborne and Associates. Anyway, I accidentally acquired a book that was signed by him.
